GIFFORD LECTURES AT UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
Diana Eck will deliver a Series of Gifford Lectures in the University of Edinburgh in 2008 – 2009. She is Professor of Comparative Religion and Indian Studies, Frederic Wertham Professor of Law and Psychiatry, Harvard University.
Dates: 27, 28, 30 April, 4, 5, 7 May 2009.
All lectures take place at 5.30 pm.
St Cecilia's Hall, Cowgate, Edinburgh
Lecture Series Theme: "The Age of Pluralism"
Overview: The historic religious traditions of humankind are being reshaped in our time by the encounter of people of every faith with one another. The past half-century has accelerated this encounter, and the awareness of religious diversity is today part of the experience and consciousness of people throughout the world. This "age of pluralism" is a concomitant of the massive migration of peoples and the emergence of new cultural demographies in which diversity is ever more evident. Encounter with the religious "other" is also amplified by the speed of communications in the Internet age. Yet diversity alone does not constitute pluralism. How has today's multireligious reality created new and more complex societies and cities? How has it given rise to new theological and spiritual perspectives within each religious tradition? What does the term "interfaith" mean in the many contexts of human life and society today?

'Singing Louder - Echoes of Drapchi Prison'
A concert and public talk by four Tibetan nuns imprisoned for peaceful protest.
The four Tibetan nuns, Gyaltsen Drolkar, Phuntsok Nyidron, Namdrol Lhamo and Ngawang Sangdrol were all imprisoned in Lhasa's notorious jail, Drapchi, for expressing their loyalty to Tibet's exiled leader, the Dalai Lama, and calling for Tibet's freedom in peaceful protests. In June 1993, they secretly recorded in their prison cells moving songs about their love for their country and the Dalai Lama, to signal to their families and the Tibetan people that their spirits remained unbroken. One of the tapes was smuggled out of prison and later distributed around the world.
For your chance to hear the nuns sing those same songs and recount their experiences of prison come along to their concert and public talk
Of the 'Drapchi 14', or 'Tibet's singing nuns' as they became known around the world, one died in custody, seven remain in Tibet and six are now living in exile in India, Belgium, Switzerland and the USA. The nuns will be in Edinburgh as part of a UK reunion, organised by the Tibetan Community in Britain

Gandhi, My Father
Thu 31 Jan at 5.45pm Feroz Abbas Khan • India 2007 • 2h14m • 35mm • English and Hindi with English subtitles • PG
Cast: Darshan Jariwala, Akshaye Khanna, Bhumika Chawla, Shefali Shah, Vinay Jain. Gandhi, My Father opens in Bombay in 1948, a few weeks after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. A drunken disheveled man is picked up by officials and taken to the paupers’ hospital, whereupon he reveals himself to be Harilal, the oldest son of Ghandi. The rest of the story is told in flashback, starting in 1906 with Harilal’s attempts to follow his father into the legal profession, through his decline into petty theft and destitution, his conversion to Islam and the eventual breakdown of his relationship with his family. The film unfolds against the momentous historical events of the time, conveyed through newsreel footage, and tells the story of the sacrifices made by Mahatma Gandhi to become the father of the Indian nation. Far from diminishing the man, the film paints him in a more human light, conveying the painful sacrifices that he had to make in the political, social and spiritual liberation of his people. Another Film worth seeing!
In Memory of Myself
In memoria di me Fri 11 to Mon 14 Jan Saverio Costanzo • Italy 2007 • 1h55m • 35mm • Italian with English subtitles • U – Contains mild scenes of distress
Cast: Christo Jivkov, Filippo Timi, Marco Baliani, André Hennicke, Fausto Russo Alesi.
Italian writer/director Saverio Costanzo penetrates the enclosed world of a Jesuit seminary in In Memory Of Me, an absorbing and atmospheric account of a trainee priest’s novitiate. The handsome Andrea (Christo Zhirko) is a new recruit at an all-male religious community on a island across from Venice. Under the watchful eye of his Father Superior (André Hennicke), he immerses himself in the daily routines of prayers, scripture reading and contemplation, yet serious doubts about his chosen vocation soon surface.
Action and dialogue are sparse so what takes place is weighted with intent and import, although never ponderously so. Costanzo is focusing not just on the trials of religious and cloistered study, but on elements of daily and lifetime living that are profoundly, universally resonant. He has crafted a superbly measured piece that moves at the deliberate pace of the monastic world to build up a compelling tension from the simplest of exchanges and observations.
