'Identity' Exhibition

An Exploration of Identity and Community

A generation of our young people have grown up under the shadow of 9/11, being distrusted, ignored, shunned and regularly abused for the colour of their skin and the religion they follow.

A group of young Scottish Muslim and Sikh men came together in the Edinburgh Inter-Faith Association's 'Identity Projects', a series of workshops and trips designed to explore the multiple layers of identity that we all carry with us. They wanted to show their fellow Scots that there is nothing to fear from them and put together an exhibition and booklets about who they are, so that others might match their courage to get to know their own Sikh and Muslim neighbours better.

The exhibition comprises of a series of 'Still Life' images, taken by photographer Elizabeth Handy, where participants chose five objects to represent the most important things in their lives. These were arranged and photographed alongside a portrait photo of the participant themselves. Elizabeth's work aims to give you a fuller picture of the person photographed, their hopes and dreams, their pride and the parts of their identity they protect and nurture. It is truly insightful and a real honour to witness.

The participants were also involved in collecting sounds and images from their daily lives along with interviews with some of the young men involved. These were put into a multimedia montage to compliment the photographs and accompanying booklets. Identity Exhibition Venues:
