Information for Homeless Community

There are a number of services available for homeless and vulnerable communities in Edinburgh. Below we have listed some of these, if you have any additions please get in touch:

Duty/Crisis service (Monday – Friday, 9 – 12am, 2 – 5pm), food parcels, toiletries, laundry, shower

The Rock Trust works in Edinburgh and the Lothians with young people between the ages of 16- 25 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Our role is to advise, educate and support young people. We want to enable them to build the personal skills and resources required to make a positive and healthy transition to adulthood, while avoiding or moving on from homelessness.



Two City Centre Council services advise and assist over a range of emergency and long term accommodation:

The Housing Options Team  1 Cockburn Street, for individuals, couples, those with children.

Telephone 529 7368.  Hours 8.30 – 5 (Tuesday 10 – 5, Friday 8.30 –3.40).

Across Waverley Bridge, No. 1 is on left corner of entrance to Cockburn St.

The Access Point

(locally known as TAP) 17 and 23 Leith Street, Telephone 529 7438 (out of hours 0800 032 5968).     Open 9 – 5 (Tuesday 10 – 5, Friday 9 – 4, closed Saturday and Sunday).

Advice and assistance for homeless people without children.  It can access other services like furniture supply, and it has a medical practice for homeless people (the Edinburgh Access Practice) on the premises.

At the far (east) end of Princes St., fork left into Leith St.  Access Point is on right.

Care Shelter:

From November to March. Overnight accommodation & evening meal available (details in church porches).  Meet Bethany van at 9.15 p.m. in Waterloo Place.


Streetwork Crisis Service:

(former Cowgate Centre) 22 Holyrood Road (557 6055).  Freephone number 24/7 (calls from mobiles charged) is 0808 1782323.  24-hour Crisis Centre (+ laundry, showers, lockers) for people in Housing Crisis and at risk of sleeping rough.  For Women’s Service, ring 556 9756)

Down High St to St Mary’s Street (3rd right past South Bridge).  At bottom, left at lights, then 100 yards along on right.

Free:    St Catharine’s Convent, 4 Lauriston Gardens

Meals 9 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and 5.30 – 6.45 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Up Lothian Rd. to Tollcross, sharp left into Lauriston Place, 3rd on right is Lauriston Gardens, go down, enter gate on left.

Jericho House, 53 Lothian Street.  Sunday coffee & lunch 10.30-1.30, Wed/Thurs Soup kitchen 6-7.

Up Mound, along George 4 Bridge, keep left at lights after Chambers St. No. 53 is on left just before next lights.

Carrubbers Christian Centre, 65 High Street (556 2626):  Breakfast on Sunday, 8 – 9 a.m.

Care Van:  9 – 10 p.m., Waverley Bridge, – hot food, drinks, clothes, blankets.

Small charge:   Salvation Army   25 Niddry Street Drop-in Centre (523 1060):  Low-cost meals (not Saturday

or Sunday):  Breakfast 9 -10 a.m (£1.25), Lunch 12 – 1 p.m. (£1 for 3 courses).  Also: advice/support,

showers, activities, group work.   Clothing store Mon/Wed/Fri 10.30-11.30 a.m.  Classes

Tue/Wed/Thur/Fri pm.                                                To High Street, head down.  1st turn right after South Bridge.

Cowgate Clinic, 20 Cowgate, (240 2810):   Services:  GP, nurses, dentist, podiatrist, mental health:

Monday to Friday 9 – 5 (Wed 10-5) (closed 3rd Wed. morning in month, and for lunch 12.45 – 1.45)

Up Lothian Road, 1st turning left into Kings Stables Rd., continue to Grassmarket.  At far end, keep straight on into                 Cowgate.  Clinic is immediately on left.  [or, up Mound, over lights at top, down Victoria Street on right, keep left.]

Spittal Street Centre, 22-24 Spittal St.. (drug & sexual problems, HIV, women’s clinic, harm reduction):
